Homeroom teachers,
I requested that this email and attached document go out through NCS communications. Also, I am sending it to you via email. We need 12 volunteers for the day to help package classroom hot dog orders. Volunteers should be able to sign up at the following link on Sign Up Genius:

www.SignUpGenius.com/go/60B0D45A9AE29AA8-field

We have received a school wide donation of hot dogs, ketchup, and mustard. The only items I am seeking for donation are hot dog buns, foil roaster pans, charcoal, food safe gloves, chips and freezer pops. I ask that each homeroom class hold onto their donations with the exception of hot dog buns, roaster pans, charcoal, and gloves. Please send all buns, roaster pans, charcoal, and gloves to me. All other donations (chips, freezer pops, or any other food that you want to have included in your class' field day picnic) should be kept in your homeroom.
Please read the attached document and let me know if you have questions.

I was reading this article and thought about health breakfast ideas on the mornings of EOG's

Planning Healthy Breakfasts for School Days

6-healthy-breakfast-ideasEveryone knows that the before school breakfast is absolutely the most important meal of the day. This is the first food your child will have eaten since dinner last night. The tank is officially empty until you put breakfast on the table and in their mouths. This is why breakfast should be the biggest meal that you eat every day. It needs to backfill the hole left by a good night's sleep while preparing you to face the day ahead. No other meal should carry this kind of weight and accordingly, lunch is smaller than breakfast and dinner is smaller than lunch.

How Much Food Should Your Child Have?

When you plan your child's breakfast, you first need to take into account their daily nutritional needs. Children over seven should have approximately 2,200 calories a day. One third to one half of those calories should be a part of your child's breakfast. Properly distributed among the correct food groups those calories will keep your child moving from the breakfast table to the lunch break.
This is important because studies suggest that children who go to school hungry perform poorly and eat more calories in their day than children who eat a proper breakfast. Teachers often cover heavy hitting subjects like arithmetic in the morning and underfed children lack the resources they need perform at their best.

What Kind of Foods Should Your Child Have?

A proper breakfast meets all your child's morning nutritional needs. Nutritious breakfast options include a variety of foods from the important food groups including:
* Grains
* Fruits and vegetables
* Dairy
* Meat
Fruit and vegetables provide necessary vitamins and minerals while complex carbohydrates offer a sustained energy burn that will keep your child going until lunch. A sugary breakfast will only get your child from the table to the classroom. Dairy and meat provide more appropriate sources of immediate energy.

Breakfast Ideas for You and Your Family

It can be difficult to make sure that your family has the time for a full breakfast in the rush of the morning, but it is worth it. One way to make it a little easier is to plan your meals an evening ahead and set out non-perishable ingredients. Healthy breakfast ideas for your children include:
* Eggs
* Fruit smoothies
* Fruit parfaits
* French toast, waffles, or pancakes made with whole grains
* Hot cereals like oatmeal with dried fruit and / or nuts on top
* Bananas and peanut butter
* Cottage cheese and fruit
* Whole-wheat toast with peanut or almond butter
These are just a few ideas. Whatever else you do make sure that you steer away from simple sugars and fatty foods when you plan your child's breakfast. Though breakfast is a great time to eat high calorie foods, too much sugar and fat will only drag your child down during the day, where as a great breakfast will pave the way for a great day.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. We need to study for the EOG but also relax. Do not stress or worry.  We have worked hard all year and most of us are ready. Those who did not do well on this weeks practice needs to spend more time reviewing.

See you Monday.

EOG DATES:

Math- May 21
Reading- May 22
Science- May 23

Social Studies Extra Credit

My goal was to have students learn the 50 states before the end of the year. However, time is running short. Due to 5th grade testing early, report cards going home before school's out,  and other obstacles I fear I will not be able to teach it continuously during class time. Some days we will, but 2-3 days is not enough to learn all 50 states. So for extra credit, you will need to label as many of the 50 states as possible on a blank map. Come to me any day before May 29 and I will give you a blank sheet to label the states. You must do this in front of me, not at home. For every state you get correctly, I will add that many points to your lowest Social Studies grade.

I have posted many link at the bottom of my blog to quiz students and I have flashcards you may borrow. Good Luck!!!

Extra Credit: 10 points on lowest Science Quiz

We have studied many topics this year in science. For extra credit research 10 job related fields that go along with what we have learned this year. Explain what topic this career relates to and a few details about the career.

Example:
1.      We studied about a few chemicals so a career in that topic would be Chemical Engineering. Chemical engineering uses science to process raw materials and chemicals into useful forms. Work by chemical engineers can lead to the discovery of important new materials and/or medicines.
2.      We studied mechanical energy. A job related field is Automobile Technician / Mechanic In this career field people keep equipment available for use by inspecting and testing vehicles; completing preventive maintenance such as, engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotation and changes, wheel balancing, replacing filters.

There are lots of topics to choose from that we studied. You must have detailed answers to get full credit.
Due on Friday (May 17)

SS extra credit will be coming soon. J
I want to thank everyone again for the cards, flowers and gifts this week. I feel very appreciated!

Homework is to get Progress Reports signed and study for EOG.

Found this picture and thought I would share.

Thursday, May 9, 2013

Quiz tomorrow on Cells, Heredity and human Body Systems. Progress reports were also sent home today and need to be signed by parents.

Thanks,
Mrs. Fail

Wednesday, May 8, 2013

Tonight's homework is to finish the cut/paste from class. We will go over the answers tomorrow in class.

Have a good night.

Thanks so much for all the flowers. They really brighten up the classroom!

Sunday, May 5, 2013

Happy Monday!

This week we will be reviewing for the EOG. We will have a quiz on Tuesday (Heat and Force/Motion), then on Friday (Cells, Body, Heredity). The quiz on Friday should be very easy since we just learned this after Spring Break. I found a few videos that may explain a few things for you to watch.

Let's have a great week and work hard!

Love,
Mrs. Fail

Thursday, May 2, 2013

We have been studying force and motion today. There is a homework review sheet tonight. Students you may use your old notes, EOG folder, flashcards, and anything else to help you. Even your parents can help! :-)

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

THANK YOU! I am very pleased with the quiz grades today. We had several 100's. Today we started reviewing for Conduction, Convection, and Radiation; some students are still getting confused.

Conduction- the transfer of heat by touch
Convection- the transfer of heat by currents (through liquid or gas)
Radiation- the transfer of heat by waves (like fire or the sun)

There will be a worksheet Wednesday night for homework to review.

Physical and Chemical change were major topics missed on the practice EOG.

A Chemical change is when you change the substance completely. Something new is formed after the chemical reaction. Examples: Apple rotting, wood burning, nail rusting. You can see that the substance looks different, there may be a new color or bad smell.

A Physical Change is still the same substance but it has been altered a little. Example: slicing an apple, cutting wood, or painting over a nail.

I have asked to students to remember the key words in a chemical reaction that may be on the EOG answer choices. Words like rotting, rusting, burning...those are key indicators the answer is a chemical reaction.

Sunday, April 28, 2013

Hello Everyone,

I hope we are ready for another great week at NCS. This week I will be sending home a green slip of paper with the practice EOG results. Please sign and return to school. We will be reviewing the Ecosystem on Monday, quiz Tuesday, then reviewing Heat Energy and Force/Motion for the rest of the week.

Most students did great on the Ecosystem, Human Body, and Heredity on the practice EOG. Our weak points are Force/Motion, Weather, Matter and Heat Transfer.

Force and Motion Key Vocabulary:

Force- A push or a pull of an object
Speed - The distance an object moves in a given amount of time
Motion - A change in the position of an object as it is moving
Friction-  A force that slows down a moving object when it rubs against another object
Gravity - A force that attracts objects to each other. The force of gravity holds you to Earth.

Heat Transfer Key Vocabulary:
Heat- a form of thermal energy. Transfers energy from warmer object to cooler objects.
Insulator- a material in which heat and electricity cannot flow though.
Convection- the transfer of heat from one place to another though fluids
Conductor- an object that allows the flow of electrical charge.
Radiation- energy that travels through space by waves.
Temperature- the measure of heat

Matter Key Vocabulary:
solid- an object with an exact shape and size
liquid- has exact size, but no shape: wet
gas- has no shape or size, like air
physical properties- things that can be seen, touched, or measured about something
chemical change- make something change into something different
physical change- changes in something (like size or shape) that don't make it into something different
melting point- the temperature where a solid
boiling point- the temperature where a liquid boils and turns into a gas
evaporate- to change a liquid to a vapor using heat
condense- to change a gas into a liquid
condensationhow a gas is changed back into a liquid
freezing point- the temperature where a liquid changes into a solid
densityhow close the smallest parts of the object are
mass- the amount of stuff (matter) in an object
volume- the amount of space that an object takes up
matter- anything that has mass and takes up space

Weather Key Vocabulary
water cycle- the constant movement of water
evaporation- the process of becoming a vapor
precipitation- the falling to earth of any form of water (rain or snow or hail or sleet or mist)
ground water- underground water that is held in the soil or aquifer
front - the boundary between two different air masses
land breeze- breeze at night flowing from the land to the sea
sea breeze- breeze flowing during the day from the sea to the land

wind - air moving (sometimes with considerable force) from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure
westerlies- prevailing winds that blow from west to east in the United States
prevailing winds- the global winds that blow constantly from the same direction
greenhouse effect- warming that results when solar radiation is trapped by the atmosphere
El Nino- a short term climate change as a result of unusual warming of currents in Pacific Ocean.
climate- the average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time
weather- the condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place

wind vane- Instrument used to measure wind direction
condensation- the process by which molecules of water vapor in the air become liquid water
run-off- Water (usually from rain) that flows over a land surface in streams and water ways

Weather has the most definitions because it has the highest percent of questions on the EOG.
Here are some links I found this weekend to help you!

Sea/Land Breeze - Notice how the temperature of water never changes. During the day the sand is much hotter and at night the sand is much cooler. Uneven heating causes the breeze to flow in different directions. Also recall water takes longer to heat than solids.

Thursday, April 25, 2013

Look what I just found!

Build a Food Chain

Producer Consumer Decomposer

Biomes
Focus on the Freshwater readings :-)
After grading the weather tests, I am begging you to study. This is the first topic we covered this year so we have to dig deep into our brains. The main topics that were missed were:

Sea Breeze
Land Breeze
El Nino
La  Nina
What type of weather occurs during low and high pressure systems.

Trust me when I say I have said this definitions 100 times over in class. Now it is up to the student to put in the efforts and study.

Tonight's homework is an Ecosystem review sheet.

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Here is a picture to study. Tonight's homework is to study and finish the Chapter 3 review.
