Cell

Basic unit of structure and function in living things

Tissue

A group of similar cells that perform the same function.

Organ

A collection of tissues that carry out a specialized function of the body.

Organism

A living thing; anything that can carry out life processes independently.

Organ Systems

Group of organs that work together to perform an important function. Examples: Digestive, Respiratory, Cardiovascular

Cell Wall

A protective layer on the outside of plant cells.

Cell Membrane

A cell structure that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell. This surrounds the outside of an animal cell and is found under the cell wall in plants.

Vacuoles

Cell organelle that stores materials such as water.

Cytoplasm

A jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended.

Nucleus

Controls the cells function and contains the cells DNA

Microscope

An optical instrument for magnifying very small objects such as single cells.

Vertebrate

An animal with a backbone.

Invertebrate

An animal that does not have a backbone

Single Celled Organisms

Also called unicellular. This organism is made of one cell and can perform all life's functions.

Multicellular Organisms

An organism made of more than one cell. Different cells inside this organism work together to survive.

Chloroplast

An organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs
